Jim Simons achieved renown first as a mathematician and later as a pioneering investor. As a mathematician he made groundbreaking contributions to differential geometry that continue to influence modern mathematics and theoretical physics today. Later he launched Renaissance Technologies, introducing quantitative trading to Wall Street and earning himself the title, “Quant King.” After retiring from Renaissance, he focused his attention fully on philanthropy.
Marilyn Simons, with a Ph.D. in economics, has spent her working life strengthening mission-based organizations. As a non-profit board member, she has applied her skills and insight to guide their work through strategic leadership, financial oversight, and long-term planning. Marilyn served as the first president of the Simons Foundation from its inception in 1994 to 2021 and chairs the organization today. The foundation supports mathematicians, scientists, research institutions and programs to engage a wide range of people with science.
Ronald McDonald House Long Island today pays tribute to Jim’s legacy and honors Marilyn’s and his commitment to improving lives. Through their philanthropy, Jim and Marilyn Simons have greatly impacted science, mathematics, education, and health. And through their support of the Ronald McDonald House Long Island, it is able to expand its care programs in Suffolk County at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.
